The Ronettes had it all wrong. The best part of breaking up is not the making up, it’s the wake-ing up. This post is in loving memory of our beloved Obscure Couture and I for one don’t know if I’ll ever be ready to say goodbye. The Scottish Design house that have been making our other clothes jealous for the past 5 years is soon to be a treasure of the past, but that doesn’t mean they are closing quietly! This is the party we have all been waiting for, this Obscure Couture’s swan song, this is Death by Glitter in BLOW, Finnieston, and all mourners are invited.
We were all shocked when the news broke over instagram last June, our favourite Scottish label announced they were shutting up shop, making crying emojis trend worldwide. Obscure Couture were my first loves of Scottish Fashion. Known for their bold and sassy stage and evening wear, their collections are almost a documentation of my own style journey within the industry. You know that feeling when you meet someone who just ‘gets’ you? Well that was the case when the universe introduced me to Jenn Coyle and Lyndsay Pagan. Taking a stance against fast fashion, Obscure Couture created limited edition, couture and RTW collections all of which made heads turn. Their chemistry knew no bounds as they created the impossible: collections for the introverted extrovert (or the extroverted extrovert) which were loved, worn and appreciated worldwide by celebrities, stylists and girl gangs alike. Here is my ode to them, my back catalogue of OC looks which has helped shape my personal style to this day.
Breaking and creating trends rather than following them, Obscure Couture stood for individuality, confidence and creativity while never doing things by halves. From working so hard that they never left their Barrowlands studio for 3 solid weeks to dressing up as mermaids bouncing on castles for inspiration, OC’s constant creation was surrounded by nothing but love and passion, which you could physically feel when you wear their individually numbered clothes. This is why is would be a crime to not give the Scottish Fashion Institution a wake like they deserve, a last chance to buy a piece of them, and what better place to do it than their spiritual glittery home, BLOW, Finnieston.
Every hostess thinks they their party will outdo all others, but that’s probably because they haven’t been to an OC Party. Not only will they be taking over the windows at Blow, Finnieston all month (you may have seen them already) but there will be music, drinks, dancing oh, and a chance to buy the very last of Obscure Couture. This news got me crying all the way to the bank, especially when I found out their one off couture pieces are already listed on eBay, which will end during Saturday night’s party. That black and sheer fishtail WILL BE MINE DAMMIT!
The party will begin at 7pm where people can mourn, dance, sing and buy for the very last time. Lady Munter will announce the end of the online auction before we take the party from BLOW to SWG3 to dance the night away in their honour (SOB).
Make sure you join the Facebook page for all party updates. Nothing will prepare me for the loss of their designs, so I will make sure they live on through being on my body. Now, for one last time, make my other clothes jealous!
