How many polo necks do you have in your wardrobe? If the answer is none, please, do your wardrobe a favour and get one. A good polo neck is an essential item to buy this Autumn / Winter. It has quickly become as equal a staple to the plain white tee or Brenton stipe. Come rain or shine, casual or smart, your polo neck will see you through many a wardrobe dilemma and I don’t see it leaving anytime soon. And why the hell would it?!
Seriously though, what did we do before the polo? Depending how it’s styled, a polo neck can either be the perfect nod to the 60’s silhouette or generically sleek up your outfit. Whether layered underneath tops or dresses, worn on their own, tucked in or out, the polo neck is at the top of it’s game and I’m determined to get one in all my favourite colours, shapes and fabrics. There must be a reason there are so many variations, so since it’s not broke I’ll be taking serious advantage of this!
In this lovely layering look, I decided to channeling the original Biba Dolly, the late Cilla Black. Her style was effortless pairing boxy shapes on top of one another to create the perfect beatnik look. I doubled up on the classics with this black and white striped polo worn underneath this super cute denim dress both from Dorothy Perkins. Dorothy Perkins never stops surprising me. It’s one of those shops I almost force myself to go in ‘just encase’ but always seem to pick up something special more times than not. I grabbed thisas an AW preview from The Aprtmnt at LFW but both are online and in stores now. From the collar to the exposed zip, the polo neck compliments the statement dress perfectly, instantly taking the outfit from cute to 60’s sass in one swift layer. Crazy what a polo can do, eh?

No matter what your style, a polo neck will complete your wardrobe for years to come. What’s more, it will be sticking around to next spring! At this rate, I have a feeling I will become some sort of polo collector. Is there any item in your wardrobe you could never live without? If not. Make it polo.
