This past year we’ve seen a surge in crowdfunding where brands ask you, the people, to invest in their idea or product. Many of them won’t reach their goal or even have their idea come to life unless they convince the public that their ideas are worth their cold hard cash. Which is exactly what Scottish wearable art brand Dead Sleekit managed to do with over 72 hours to go. Can anyone say PARTY?!

Dead Sleekit

The brainchild of The Herald Scotland’s Graduate of the Year, Iain McDonald,  Dead Sleekit was the resurrection of Scottish indie brand Naromode which closed its online doors in 2014.  Making a name for designing wearable art, Iain went solo to create intricate prints which are drawn by hand and put together digitally to create a story. And what a beautiful story it is…

The first collection under the new brand is sleek, romantic, playful, and classic. I know those group of words don’t usually go together, but Iain makes various textures and designs work together in perfect harmony. Using a mix of mesh and jersey with his passion for creating textiles, Dead Sleekit uses local printing and manufacturing locally in Scotland, yet still manages to keep the prices reasonable. I mean, beautifully crafted art for your body for just £42?! It’s no wonder they have smashed their Kickstarter target.

With 42 hours left of their crowdfund, these extra pennies ontop of their £4K target will make all the difference in the future of Dead Sleekit. Not only will they be able to create more designs by having their textiles digitally printed by the metre, but also sustain the growth of the business as a whole by working with sales agents and trade shows. What’s more, Dead Sleekit can make items up to any size and rumour has it, there’s an American Horror Story collection in the making. Let’s hope so!

It’s so difficult in this day and age for small designers to create their own textiles and keep things affordable, which is why this Kickstarter is worth.every.penny. And the reason why you steal a piece of the pie before all these one off rewards are gone for good.

So instead of picking that typical Mother’s Day cliche, head over to the Kickstarter and grab a piece of indie design for her to cherish forever. And while you’re there, I’d like another one too!
